Case Study: Bush Hammering of Pool Deck & Garden Areas / Radisson Blu Golden Sands Resort & Spa

Challenge
The resort’s machine-cut natural stone looked premium but had become dangerously slippery when wet—particularly around pools and garden paths used by barefoot guests. The smooth, blade-cut finish allowed a thin film of water to create a “hydroplaning” effect underfoot, elevating the risk of sudden slips and falls.

Objectives
• Raise slip resistance for barefoot and shod traffic in both wet and dry conditions
• Preserve the natural stone aesthetic and avoid full replacement
• Address minor trip risks from irregular paving and sharp edges
• Deliver the upgrade with minimal disruption to guest areas

Solution
We specified Bush Hammering, a mechanical surface treatment that uniformly textures natural stone to increase the coefficient of friction without introducing a coating. The process also refreshes the appearance by removing surface glaze, evening out variations in crazy paving and softening sharp or uneven edges—combining safety and visual uplift in one step.

Implementation
• Survey & sample: A discreet test area confirmed the target texture and appearance with the client’s team.
• Surface treatment: Using specialised bush-hammer heads, we created a controlled, even texture across the designated walkways.
• Detail finishing: Transitions and edges were refined to reduce trip points while maintaining a comfortable feel for barefoot use.
• Clean-down & handover: Areas were cleaned and returned to service with guidance on routine care.

Outcome
• Significant traction gain in wet and dry conditions, reducing slip risk for guests in high-use zones.
• Aesthetic refresh with a clean, consistent finish that retains the stone’s natural character—no “coated” look.
• Sustainable, cost-effective upgrade achieved without the waste, expense or disruption of lifting and replacing the floor.
Maintenance & Longevity
Routine cleaning with Safe Kleen keeps the textured surface free of residues to maintain grip. Because the safety is provided by the mechanical texture—not a film—there is no curing time or re-coating cycle.
